Celebrate Jean-Michel Basquiat and Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary with Exhibition Viewing and Panel discussion hosted by Jeanine Heriveaux and Lisane Basquiat featuring special guests. After the panel, head to the exhibition courtyard for an after party featuring a special guest DJ.

Music was always a strong influence on Jean-Michel’s paintings – jazz, bebop and hip hop – musical genres that resonated with him and the subject of many of his works. Stylistically, his works often deconstruct and reassemble subjects, similar to the cadence of hip hop. And in his use of language – challenging preconceived ideology – is something that hip hop and Jean-Michel share.

In 1983, Jean-Michel produced and arranged “Beat-Bop” with K Rob and Rammellzee. Jean-Michel also designed the album cover. It was featured in the movie Wild Style and was ranked by Rolling Stone among the 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of all time.
